Common Potty Training Problems

Many Parents run into problems while potty training their child. I've listed some of these common problems below along with tips on how to overcome them.

  • Constipation
  • Constipation can often become a real problem for children during the potty training stage. Be sure to offer a high fiber diet to your child before and during the training. Speak with your pediatrician if you see that constipation is becoming a problem.

  • Accidents
  • Accidents are part of training and they will happen. Being sure to prepare yourself for these accidents will make training go much easier. Stay positive even with the accidents, making sure to never scold the child. Scolding the child can create setbacks and make the potty training process longer then it needs to be.

If you start seeing accidents after your child's been potty trained you might want to check with your pediatrician because your child could be suffering from a medical condition.

  • Fear of Public Restrooms
  • When out shopping or running errands, chances are, your child will need to use the potty. Some children are afraid of using the big public potty because the toilet is large, the flusher is loud and the stalls are small and usually dirty - who can blame him?

There are several things you can do to help make your child feel comfortable with using public restrooms. You can start before ever leaving the house. Create a little "travel" pack for your child. Have wipes, a seat cover, the flush stopper and hand sanitizer.

Show the fun little pack to your child and explain what they are for. Girls like to carry little purses so put the pack in a purse for her to carry. For the boys fold it up and put it in a fanny pack or backpack for them. Your child will be excited about carrying their little bathroom packs that it will make using the public restroom easier for them.
