Preparing Your Child for Potty Training

When your child starts showing many of the signs of potty training readiness, you should start introducing him to the idea potty training. Here's a list of items and things you can do and use to help introduce potty training to your child.

Potty Training Books & Videos - Sitting and reading books or watching videos on potty training with your toddler is a good first step towards getting your child potty trained. These potty training books and videos can get the child use to the words and concepts and often helps decrease the fear of using the potty.

Potty Chair - Putting a potty chair in your bathroom a month or two before you start potty training will help get your child ready for the idea of using it. You can explain to the child that it's their potty chair and they can use it when they want to go pee or potty. You shouldn't force the child to sit on the potty chair or to use it until the training actually begins but if they chose to use it, praise them!

Training Pants and Underwear - Moving away from diapers and pull-ups and using training pants and underwear instead will help your child feel that he is wet so he'll more quickly learn when to use the potty.

Potty Training Doll - An anatomically correct drink & wet doll is recommended by Dr. Phil for potty training in one day. His method for potty training involves having the child teach the wetting doll to use the potty. The act of teaching the doll to use the potty ends up teaching the child as well.
